ABOUT

The After Life is a platform where stories of Australia's retired population can be told.
Some of these stories highlight some extraordinary tales our retired population has to offer, while others give readers an insight to both the positives and negatives of a retired lifestyle.
We hope these stories are enjoyed by all types of people, and that it teaches them that there is life in retirement.

TEAM
Tayla Bosley

Editorial Producer

This project is very dear to me and I am very proud of we have achieved with the Afterlife. This is because I have a very close relationship with my maternal grandparents, and so bringing to life their stories, and the stories of other retirees is something that I am truly passionate about.
As Editorial Producer I was a keen instigator in the creation of the project, and I have advised and edited other stories that are included in the project.
My four written stories were created to highlight two things: one being the secret stories that hide behind the older faces that we see every day on the street. And two is proving that retirement can hold a lot more than we expect it to.

Mackenzie Viney

Social Media Manager

To be a part of what we have created here on this website has been simply wonderful. I can’t express the emotions I’ve been through when I spoke with some dear people and they opened up not just about their career pre retirement but about personal life experiences and exposed themselves each in a way as well. I am glad to have worked alongside Tayla, Jordan and Sarah to put together a series of incredible stories that will share, inspire and bring together many individuals through the experiences of another.

Being the Social Media Manager I gained an insight into more lives than the people I interviewed and some of the incredible statistics around retirees, early retirement, travel and much more.

My audio series featuring a nine piece collection titled ‘Life of Stephen Tanner’ and my other two audio stories tell of incredible and traumatic experiences these individuals have faced that in many ways have shaped their retirement and for some are the reason they retired.

I hope our social media feeds can inform and intrigue your interest for the wonderful stories we feature on our website. My photo gallery will share with you just a little hint of the people we met and the people you’ll get to know at The Afterlife.

Jordan Forbes

Web Designer

This project was one I was extremely interested in when we first begun. The are a lot of people I know, both friends and family, that are retired and I always wondered what their outlook on life is.

This project allowed me to test some of my design skills as Web Designer. This was the first fully operational website I had created.

The use of my info-graph allowed me to highlight important statistics about retired people in Australia and their lifestyle.

My two written stories act as companion pieces to the statistics in the info-graph. They explore topics such as the change in lifestyle for a retired person and the complications of receiving the aged pension.

Sarah Leong

Audio Journalist

Retirement is not an aspect of my future life I had ever thought about until now, which is why the concept and initiation of this project spikes my curiosity and interests me to explore and learn more about what will one day arrive for us all.

As a journalist, bringing people the insight and erudition they need with news is only one aspect of my passion, it's storytelling that fuels the  zeal I have for journalism. I truly believe everyone has a story to tell, for we all live a life. Narratives were told from the beginning of humanity - each tale as valuable as the other as they contribute to chronicling time and existence. To be able to listen to the stories of those I've interviewed has been an absolute pleasure.

As the audio journalist for The Afterlife, I seek to convey these stories through the simple yet powerful expression of sound, so you can picture the story of another being through your own imagination and gain insight from what you gather through your perception of these stories.

Lastly, from interviewing Stephen Tanner with Mackenzie, to expanding my knowledge with Jordan's research and reading over Tayla's written pieces, working with this team has been wonderful to be able to bring you The Afterlife.

Through my pieces I hope to remind us all that we still have our identity to hold onto and grow, rather than being labeled with the conventional view of being 'just' a retiree when the time comes.
